Share picture

Mesclun, sweet peppers, red shallots, mizuna, green tomatoes, torpedo onions, purple potatoes, scallions, curly parsley, Blythedale Farm brie, Pete's Greens Kitchen chicken stock.

We were also to have gotten Lacto-Fermented Dill Pickles from Pete's Greens Kitchen but for some reason it was crossed off the share list at the pickup point.

It seems as though our shares have been fairly small lately. I don't know if this is because the farm has been having a tough season with all the rain or if it's related to increased costs there or if I'm just wrong about the share size.

We have decided to split the next share with another family because it's hard to use a lot of root veggies that will be coming in the next share. I've also found that if I don't cook it, it doesn't get used as Ben never plans any meals around what we've got in the share; he prefers to decide what he wants to eat and then go to the store to buy the ingredients. Our freezer is full of stuff I cook just to use share veggies up as well as tomato sauces of various types from the garden. I find I'm a bit overstocked on some things so lately I've been chopping onions and freezing them for future use because we've been getting so many of them in the share and I don't want them to go to waste. It's time to clear out the freezer a bit and we can do that over the next couple of months.

I wish we could continue to get the share weekly but it turns out that I just can't do all the cooking and keep doing everything else I've got on my to-do list so this is what I'm going to let go for now. I've also found that it's nice to have a bit more flexibility in the menu than I've got when I need to use what's in the share.

Our first missed share will be Oct 22.

I'll miss your pic on Thursday 10/22. I look forward to it every week. I was new for the summer share, but did tend to agree the shares were a bit smaller than I was made to believe they would be. I have decided to go ahead with the Fall share and see how that works. I only did the vegie for summer to try it out. I kind of got "leafed/greened" out, though.

Skeeter I wish I could keep the every week option (and the pictures!) but it just isn't realistic -- my freezer is stuffed. I'm just glad most of it is already prepared stuff...

I also froze some of the greens from that the heavy leaf/green segment of the share and use them in soups and lasagna and such. I agree it was way too much in too little time. Same with all the onions lately.

I have to say that in many ways I like the localvore stuff more than the veggies because I'm not familiar with lots of the products they've give us so I wouldn't buy a lot of these products if they didn't show up in the share. The veggies have forced me to try a lot of new things and that's good but sometimes I like to get back to the familiar and splitting the share will let me do that a bit more.

I agree with the onions. I took all of mine and made onion soup - delish. Then the next day, I took the rest of the soup which was mostly onions and some "broth" and made home-made baked beans in our crockpot. Best baked beans I've ever made.

Are you going to take every other pics of the fall share?

Some onion soup might be good...with lots and lots and lots of cheese! Isn't that the best part of onion soup?

I'll still take pictures on the weeks I get the share but alas, I don't think I can convince the person I'm sharing the share with to do the same. It is sort of an odd thing to do if you get right down to it.

Skeeter if you like the pictures have you see Ed and Lauren's share pictures? They take pictures of what they make with it although their last picture was Sept 14.
